Home Sweet Home

Again, it’s been a while since my last update. But life has been keeping me on my toes as usual and I’ve been working on a couple of new bits and bobs for the blog, as a little celebration for when I hit 1400 readers. Absolute madness, you magnificent bunch. As you have seen from my last posts, I’m trying my hardest at the moment to make my house seem more homely. I can see a theme developing in my pastel coloured, bunting filled bedroom (seriously, you’d think there was a fete going on in there) I love my white furniture but as much as I enjoy ikea (Malm bed and all the trimmings) and what they stand for, I feel like some of their stuff takes ‘simple’ to the extreme. The Fashion From Home website has been giving me so much inspiration for more stylised looking furniture, which is still within my price range! But I have no where to put any new furniture, as my flat was partly furnished when we moved in, but this will all be going in the inspiration bank for a house of my own one day.

Marina Bench – £179.
Perfect for sitting infront of the bay/town house style windows. I can imagine this with a custom size foam cushion on top, upholstered with some lovely Cath Kidston fabric. Think the drawers underneath would be great for keeping spare bed covers, bath towels etc (we don’t have any cupboard space at all in this house and it proves problematic at times)

Marina Secretary Desk – £269.
I think when I am a ‘grown up’ I’d love my own office, with a beautiful desk like this and a desktop Mac. A girl can dream eh! I actually think if you got a lovely white mirror it would do great as a dressing table too. So pretty.

Grand Beige Premium 2 Seat Sofa – £649
Since all the sofas I have ever had in my flats have been inherited, borrowed or chosen by someone else, BIG pieces of furniture like this really excite me. They are always so bloody expensive, but I will be so satisfied when the day comes that I get to choose something like this for myself. The above would be completely unpractical in a house with children or animals (unless you have a death wish) but my goodness it is lush!

Fashion From Home aim to provide affordable designer furniture, without cutting corners on quality. While I only have limited creative control over my rented accomodation at the moment, looking around their site inspired me to get creative with the latest change to my bedroom – moving houses for the guinea pigs and making a little space for the new addition to my furry family 🙂

Before:

After:

I got a new cage from a local shed company, after eyeing up the cage Jennie has for Ralphie and deciding I wanted to get my boys something similar. Although the kitten hopefully won’t bother with the guinea pigs, as he’s a ragdoll and very laid back, I thought it was a better idea to move Oscar and Alfie in a house with a roof instead of their open top playpen. It also means that they are able to stay with Dougal too, rather than being in two separate cages 🙂 I painted the whole thing white, recovered the roof with some wax tablecloth material from Mandors, and painted a wooden loveheart blue to match for the centre of the cage.

Oscar peeping up to say hello!

Slightly smaller than their last cages, which I do feel guilty about but now I will be able to give them more floor time, as there is a lot more space for them in my room to run about safely. I’ve tried my hardest to block every nook and cranny off. They like to get under/in/about/behind EVERYTHING.

And now the wee fella’s corner 🙂 I say wee fella, as he is yet to be named!

I got everything above from pets at home, apart from the rug which I got from Ikea. They had so much beautiful stuff, a really great selection so I was able to choose accordingly and pick some things that matched the colour scheme of my room.

This may all seem a bit vain ‘prettying’ up my pets surroundings, but while they turn my bedroom into a farmyard I think I have the right to make it look half decent :p But their comfort is my number one priority and I will always make sure these boys are spoiled. I’m really intrigued to see how the ragdoll kitten will get on with the piggies, anyone had any experience of this before?

Here he is! 🙂 Another picture update from the breeder. He who still has no name will be getting his last jags this week, neutured next week, and hopefully we will be able to pick him up next weekend. We literally have everything sitting ready, waiting for him to arrive. His little brown mask is starting to develop so much already, I can’t wait to see how his colouring turns out.

Now, I need your opinion on names. What is your favourite out of Dexter, Reuben, and Elliot?

Lots of love,

Ayden x

Great job on the cage, it looks lovely and the kitten's corner looks really nice too. My puppy is spoilt too and like you say if you need to have it you may as well make it look pretty 🙂 I think he looks like an Elliot, he is soooo cute 🙂 xx

I think Reuben is such a cute name. I got a ginger tom kitten a couple of months ago called Hamish and he's a little rascal, but adorable at the same time. He's growing up so fast too! I don't know about guinea pigs but I know my kitten adores my older cat (the feeling isn't mutual) and also loves the neighbours dogs!xx

I love Dexter, you can call him Dexy. Although with our two dogs I end up calling them everything else, Percie is little sausage most of the time, amongst other things, Hols is ginger princess. 🙂
You are such a good mummy to your pets, their new pad is gorgeous!
I love the couch but agree you'd need to live in a white empty room with no kids, animals or food.

I love Elliot as a name! So cute, but he's cute enough to pull off any name I think! (: If I had pets I would do exactly the same! They definitely need to be pampered and you may as well make everything look pretty at the same time! Love the little flower garland (: xx

This has to be the cutest Guinea pig cage ever! I like Reuben for a name. He is so cute! My cat is half ragdoll and he is far too laid back to go for anything, my hamster had no worries. x

Awhhh I love how it looks!!nice work!!Just a few words of advice, apparently cats dont like to eat where they shit and sleep where they shit so u may find u end up having to move things further.Apparently the same can be Said for water, they dont like it by their food,of course ur little one might be fine!On a similar vein, our little cat has issues with water, she wouldnt drink out of a dark bowl and only drinks when she sees u put it down.Appaeently it's quite common because they want to be able to see how deep the water is and that it's clean. At first this meant she moved the plastic bowl around thus spilling water everywhere but we got her a ceramic bowl so she cant move it now!She also likes to flick her litter everywhere so we got her own little dustpan and brush otherwise treading on it hurts!!How exciting!!Our Inara is a Maine coon so supposedly laid back but still lively as hell!We were naughty and let her in our bedroom so now wakes us up at5am everyday!!!xx

My friend has a ragdoll and she has had degus and hamsters without him being bothered so I think you should be fine. My pigs would love a cage like that! But they are all outside pigs so wood and tarp it is. I like the name Dexter 🙂

    Elliot! Suits him perfectly!

Dexter brings about thoughts of blood and violence.

    Reuben makes me hungry.

Elliot reminds me of T.S Eliot (diff spellig but still so perfect!)

I love the guinea pigs cage! I am a piggie mama of 3! Mine have a traditional two storey c&c cage which provides plenty of space but isn't half as pretty as yours! Where did you get the daisy chews from?

I am turning my place into a bit of a farmyard as well! We are adopting a hamster from our local rescue this weekend 🙂

He is adorable…but buying from a breeder? When there are thousands of animals sitting in shelters already born? Shame..

Hi Anonymous. Thanks for your comment – I do know where you are coming from but unfortunately the breed I wanted (Ragdolls, which are laid back and would get along with my other pets) were not available in any of the cat & dog homes I checked with.

Since you've taken the time to read back on my old posts you probably know that my last guinea pig Dougal was adopted from a shelter 🙂 So no shame – I do have a heart!

Such a cute up do you've given your piggies hutch! Oscar certainly looks happy and I think its really cool how you've personalised the design to have this chic look to it 🙂 . Katie x
