Surf’s Up

Hello all, long time no speak (well, 6 days…) The weeks are flying in, can’t believe it’s May already. Thanks for your well wishes on the last post about my current contract, it’s been keeping me busy and I’ve also been out in the sunshine every day which is nice. My freckles are out and and arms are a nice shade of pink! 🙂 My natural hair colour is pretty auburn, and I don’t tan so well so hoping the pinkness will amount to some sort of brown, rather than just fading to white (which is normally the case)

So last sunday morning, me and my boyfriend left our house at 5am to embark on a little surfing trip. We ended up at Westport, which was a good 3.5 hour drive away… Talk about breaking the new car in nicely! I haven’t driven in six months, so I think that gave me all the practise I’ve been needing. I drove there, and David drove us home (I tried to be a good co-pilot and not fall asleep, but it was tough – we were shattered!) Anyways, on to the pictures.

The eerie Scottish countryside at 6am.

Arrived at our beach.

Surf’s up!

David outside the Clan van (Clan is a surf/skate/snow shop in Glasgow) The owner Jamie taught me to surf when I was 15. He also took me and some classmates on a trip to Cornwall a couple of years in a row while we were still at school. Thus the surfing bug began! Jamie provided us with our equipment and gave David his first ever surf lesson. He did well, I’m proud 🙂 ♥

The waves were a little bit messy, and not breaking the way we’d hoped which made it a tough first time for David (and tough for me because I am SO unfit, need to work majorly on my stamina paddling out past those breaking waves) But, we still had a brilliant time. It was a tad cloudy – I know my pictures look rather grey. That’s good old Scotland for ya! I never realised how far we’d driven until Jamie told us the coast of Ireland was only 14 miles away from the beach. You could actually see it across the water before the clouds set in.

Got out of our wetsuits for lunch and a little rest. Thank you David for this oh so glam picture of me 😉

Wahhh! I befriended a little lhasa apso pup in the car park. He was so fluffy (I really wanted to steal him)

Going out to brave those waves and that lovely warm water (NOT!) The winter wetsuits did help, along with boots and gloves… and even a hood.

Hahah oh my, yes you are allowed to cringe here at my expense! David managed to snap me as I rolled into shore, as there was nothing left of the wave. Bloody knackered. I really can’t say wetsuits are a good look either by the way, but it did keep us hella’ warm.

This is what I wish the waves did look like. A slightly more noteworthy shot of me in Newquay a couple of years ago. You can read my old surfing story from that trip here. But basically, the Cornwall trip became a yearly tradition which I really did love. My Irie tattoo reminds me of the awesome times I’ve had there. I love surfing, but I never get to go enough to really progress. Hence, me STILL using the Swell foam surf boards (which are best for beginners, extremely buoyant and allow you to catch waves better and stand easier)

I feel because I don’t get to surf regularly, I spend most of each trip re-learning the stuff I got a hang of the last time. It is really frustrating. I am desperate to progress, and move onto a proper glassed custom board (I had brief success with this Neville board a few years ago) But this isn’t really going to happen unless I can start going surfing regularly. Now I’m closer to the East Coast, and that David has been bitten by the surfing bug I hope I can persuade him to make regular weekend trips with me and hopefully get this hobby back on track. I need to improve my fitness and practise my swimming a few times a week, but hopefully I can stick at it and actually get somewhere. Wish me luck? 🙂

You all know now that I’m a fan of extreme sports, and have dabbled my hand in surfing, snowboarding and motocross – but do you have any sports that you partake in regularly? Or have you experienced anything more ‘extreme’, like bungee jumping or a skydive? If you have, tell me! I’m a bit of an adrenaline junkie and would love to hear your stories ♥

Ayden x

I would love to try this out, I have awful balance but it would be cool to try it just once. It looks bloody cold, but you look ace on the board, really cool that you started at so young, it's nice that the guy trainers peeps. I think it's ace for young peeps (nothing like that really in the city). Anyway hope you are well girly and loving these photos, I want to get to the beach soon 😛

Looks awesome! I've only been surfing once and it was a school trip when I was about 11. Needless to say we didn't get enough time to learn much other than standing up!

The only sport I've played in recent years is ice hockey, I used to play when I was 15 til 20 but then it became too much to keep up while I was at uni. Maybe one day I'll get back into it, as it's super fun.

I'm really jealous – surfing is one of the things I most want to learn how to do. I have Exeter in Cornwall as my back up uni, so I keep telling myself, oh well, you'll be able to learn how to surf!

I love surfing so, so much but I'm exactly the same with having to re-learn because I just don't do it often enough because my home is the North of London & my uni is Birmingham so I'm so far away from any proper beaches! Hoping to get loads in this summer 🙂
Spent a beautiful summer after my A Levels in Australia surfing on Bondi Beach, the most perfect holiday!

Oh this looks so much fun but SO COLD! Living in Aus near the Gold Coast, I go to the beach pretty much every wkend, you should come to Aus, you would love it! I used to body board, and did a bit of surfing when I was younger, but prefer to just swim and relax these days. lol. I had a dream last night I went sky diving, I've always wanted to do it, so I think in the next couple of years I'll definitely have to do a jump! 🙂

Looks like you had a wicked day! (although some of those pics make me feel cold just looking at them!)

I wish I was one of those really sporty people but the truth is I'm terrible at anything that requires any kind of physical strength/skill!

And how ridiculously cute is that puppy?! I would have wanted to steal him too, what a gorgeous little ball of fluff!!! xxx

    Get you, you surfing hottie!
I've only been surfing a couple of times, mainly in Cornwall when I was younger, did get told I was hardcore and trying (and mainly failing) to stand up and getting wiped out, it's so knackering isn't it!
That little puppy is so cute I could squeeze him (and run away with him tucked in my jacket)

Looks like you had a great time. I've never surfed and not sure I've ever really gotten it, but I bet it's great exercise.

Given that I'm pretty clumsy and injury prone/damaged as it is, I'm not sure extreme sports are for me. Now I'm back at uni for the next month, I've re-instated my gym membership at DW. It's a 20 min walk there and back as opposed to the uni gym next to my flat, but the facilities are worth it.

I'm *so* not into extreme sports… or any kind of sports, really! Although I am getting more into running. Maybe surfing is next! x

Look at you go! I think I'd enjoy surfing but probably would never be able to stand up! This looks like a fun thing to do together but unfortunately my boyfriend doesn't like water! I would definitely like to try some more extreme sports like bungee jumping and skydiving!

    Great post!

I have a surfing photo on my latest post too – I am not being a massive copycat again (haha), we went to Cornwall for the weekend! We live a few minutes from a place called Highcliffe which is one of the best places down here for surfing, so Tom goes quite regularly. We also try and get down to Cornwall whenever we can. I say we – I sit in the warmth of Tom's camper van and watch him surf rather than doing it myself – isn't that awful! I tried it once last year but it was SO cold and I didn't have gloves or boots so my hands and feet swelled up. Plus I was borrowing Tom's backup surfboard – I really want to have a go on one of those foam boards to make it a little easier for me! We are going to Fuerteventura next month so I'm going to give it another try then, hopefully I will do better than last time!
You need to come down and stay in the spare room and we'll go out surfing from out here!

Aw these pictures are ace, I love little weekends away, I haven't been on one with my boy yet, but desperate too! – Though I'm not sure surfing would be the first idea that popped into my head, hehe! Looks fun though, bet its hard 😐

I've done windsurfing and THAT was annoying, like you said, just spending every day going over yesterdays stuff, meh, gave that up pretty quickly! Have you tried abseiling? I absolutely LOVED doing that, even though I was about 14 at the time, I'd love to do it again, the feeling as you're just going over the ledge is SCARY, but once its done, its such a rush, then coming down is just F-U-N!

Ha, I have pictures of myself EXACTLY like this, on the yellow and blue foam boards… I went two summers ago in Cornwall and it was absolutely freezing, I can't imagine how cold Scotland must be! When I moved onto the proper boards it was a shock that they actually turned – and then I got taken out by a little pipsqueak with a sharp pointy board, split open my eyebrow and spent the rest of the week with my eyes completely swollen shut. (At the time I was devastated because my surf instructor was gorgeous, and I was too ashamed to show my bloated face, but now I just wish I'd taken funny pictures). I loved it all the same! I've skiied once, plan to snowboard and currently do the most dangerous sport apparently (horse riding. Who knew?). Love them all! Glad you enjoyed yourself 🙂 x

    That dog is cuute!

Ok, I'm totally not an adrenaline junkie. Let's just say the log ride in thorpe park was intense!! I could just about ski and even that made my stomach churn.

I wish I were an adrenaline junkie and I think sometimes I need to just step out of my comfort zone and do something that terrifies me. Would never jump out of a plane though! Surfing looks quite fun, but I'd have to put aside my nightmares about being swept out to sea!!

    I really sound pathetic don't I…

I tried surfing once a few years ago and really loved it. My parents live on the coast now so I may be able to try again sometime soon!
I did a sky dive when I was travelling in New Zealand in 2006. It was 12000ft and I honestly don't know what possessed me, I wasn't even scared! When in Rome, I guess! Xx
