Breaking the routine

This Christmas I was lucky enough to get quite a bit of new makeup. But I find sometimes when it’s something that someone else is choosing for you, often you can be pushed outside of your comfort zone. In terms of brands, colours etc. But in the long run, I’ve came to discover that this isn’t a bad thing at all! I end up always getting stuck in the same makeup rut. Lusting over things that I want, but don’t need (note, this, and this, in cockney and something new) I do find that when it’s Mac related, I can see the swatches and reviews on temptalia. Which is a resource I trust and a massive help!

Benefit was the first makeup I ever dabbled in, through raiding my mum’s makeup bag (thanks mum) The packaging is always pretty, and I own a few sets with a selection of minis, rather than individual full size products. But for some reason, it is never the counter I go to first in Frasers or Boots. For some reason, this brand has became the brand that other people buy for me – I never buy it for myself. And I have no idea why! So I thought I’d bore you all and investigate a bit further…

This is the set my aunty bought me, think it’s got a pretty good wee selection! And here’s how I roll when it comes to my daily face…

My usual Simple, vs Dermalogica Clean Start my mumma got me for christmas. Ok… so it costs 3 times as much as the simple one, but this is as far as I go when caring for my face! I’ll regret it in years to come when I’m old and wrinkly. So I will defo be repurchasing this, think its a worthy investment. Up until now I was quite happy with my simple moisturiser, but good old dermalogica know what they’re doing when it comes to skincare. My face hasn’t broken out since I started using it, and I feel like my skin actually ‘sooked’ this in, rather than it just sitting on the surface. I’d love to find a body moisturiser that’s similar and soaks in really well! Suggestions welcome.

I used Mac prep and prime for so long that I actually started to wonder if it was making a difference at all to my makeup? After my friend Leah donated an almost full bottle to me (I love my friends) I can confirm that it DOES leave my skin feeling silky smooth, and almost ‘evened out’ before putting my foundation on. All good. ‘That Gal’ is actually pink in colour, which I was a bit dubious about (P&P is white and shimmery, but blends out fine!) but I discovered that it blended out fine too and didn’t make my face pink. The combination of the derma moisturiser with that gal, rather than my usual simple moisturiser with P&P, eliminated the need for any powder ontop of my foundation! This new combination base now makes my foundation more matte, which has NEVER happened to me before.

As far as concealing goes, my eyes are always the thing that needs most attention! Benefit’s ‘realness of concealness box’ is always my go to for this. So thats Lemon Aid to correct uneven skintone, Boi-ing which is an ‘industrial strength’ concealer, then some Ooh la lift on my bags to help cease the puffiness. I’d started to use a while kohl topshop liner on my waterline to help brighten up my eyes, and this pink/silver shimmery liner in the corners. I had never heard of Eye bright before, but now I have it I can ditch the two kohls – this new pencil does it all for me! I use blended into both corners and right along my waterline (when im not wearing black liner along there) and it does the trick nicely 🙂 Defo helps me to look awake in the mornings, even when I’m on the way to work and still not 100%!

Mac’s Bite of an Apple blush (right) was my first venture into a more coral blush. I had always been under the impression that my cheeks suit nothing but pink. Since falling in love with this blush, I soon learned otherwise! Coralista (left) is quite a browny coral, with a slight shimmer. Bite of an apple is quite a matte blush, so it was nice to try a coral with a bit of shimmer. At first I tried to put it on with my usual blusher brush, only to find it actually goes on better with the square shaped brush you get in the box! Only negative point about this blush, is that it definately doesn’t last as long as the mac one. I had to top Coralista up during the day, after catching myself in the mirror and looking a bit ghostly. If Benefit want to top Mac on the blusher front, I think they need to work on the staying power.

I have been having a really mascara dilemma for as long as I can remember. Basically… I am yet to find ‘the one!’ This clinique one was actually a sample, when they were offering them in exchange for handing any old mascara tubes in (strange, huh) And it has been fine… but still not the one I feel like I’ve been looking for 🙁 I was keen to try bad gal lash out again, but I’m feeling pretty indifferent about it to be honest. Its buildable, but the brush feels really dry, if that makes sense? Feels like I’m literally at my lashes for ages. Plus, I’m not a fan of the stumpy brush 🙁 I end up getting it on my fringe and hands! Maybe I’m just a fussy idiot. So if you have any great mascara suggestions then let me know! and if it turns out to be shit I’ll hunt you down! 😉 haha joooking obv.

So this is what else I used (and normally use every day) for a normal daytime face. The Mac MSF in ‘By Candlelight’ helps add a dewy glow over my foundation (now that I am matte-tastic and don’t need to use powder!) Cut A Caper is a lovely peachy coloured lipstick (again, Mac) which is my fave right now, Mac fix+ is what I spray over my finished face (but again… not sure if its actually doing anything?) I bet you’re reading this and just seeing blablablaMACblablaMAC! But you’ll be happy to know that my foundation is estee lauder double wear light, and it is the one 🙂

I used a Sleek pencil on my brows (pointless because they’re hidden all day anyways) Mac paint in ‘stilife’ as a base (the famous Urban Decay primer potion just creases on me) and I’ve used my new Caviar Dreams quad – ft Brule, Retrospeck, Et Tu Bouquet, and Caviar Dreams – which I mentioned in the last post. The colors are so pretty individually, but the name of this collection being Cham PALE is no understatement! They just don’t seem to read on my eyes at all 🙁 Combined together, they are just a bit lost. So I used Woodwinked to help it pop a bit more. But all in all, not the strongest wee collective of shadows I own! I thought i’d be able to make a nice look using this pallette alone, but in the future it will defo need a little bit of help from it’s friends. Oh, and eyeliner is Mac’s blacktrack 🙂 Ultimate fave. Haha I promise I am trying to change my ways, I am not a total Mac whore!

This post has established that I talk way too much. I fully don’t expect you to have read all of it! But if you did, well done 🙂 Should I work on making my blog posts a bit shorter? Less pictures? I hit 500 google connect followers a day or so ago, for which I feel very lucky ♥ So I’d appreciate your opinion on what you like to see on here, and what you don’t.
Since my last post, my to do list is going well! So far I’ve organised my gym induction for later on this morning, trip 1 of 2 to the spa at Blythswood Square next week, and my tattoo booked for the week after! Ayden too-ing and fro-ing like a headless chicken means some fun things to post about 🙂 So, stay tuned…

Ayden x

i wish someone would buy me benefit stuff 🙁 lol!
i bought the full sized version of badgal lash and wasn't very impressed. it dried up in the tube so quickly – even quicker than rimmel mascara's i've had lying around for goodness knows how long!
i went straight from using badgal lash to a cheapie natural collection mascara from boots which was £2 and i actually preferred it than the £14 badgal lash – crazy! xx

I always stick to the same make up which is pretty dull, I have been doing liquid eyeliner cat flicks since I was 15 which is what, 6 years? sad. Anyways I am also on the hunt for 'the one' ala mascara. Let me know anything really good!?

Lucky you getting some Benefit goodies. They just cost too much for me.
I'm not really stuck buying one particular thing. I tend to try different brands quite often. Due to money mainly.
Simple moisturiser is one staple though. Never changes, helps my skin so much. Along with Champneys face wipes believe it or not.

Don't change your posts, you have those readers because it works. I love reading your posts and well Ayden. I love you. 🙂

Love this post! I'm dying for a few more MAC products, but just can't justify the pennies at the moment.

My friend gave me a new Benefit blusher (it's not out yet, she's a beauty writer) but I can't for the life of me remember the name of it. It's gorgeous though and pretty long lasting. I need to do a little post about make up actually, so will include it in that.

As for mascara, I searched for 'the one' for years. I found it in Sephora in NYC. It's Smashbox Hyperlash and it is AMAZING x

The Benefit gift looks lovely. I've been contemplating getting Coralista for a while as the colour looks so pretty…I find Benefit products a bit hit and miss, some I have loved and others I've ended up throwing away in frustration (and then regretting it a lot as they're so expensive!) x

I didn't like badgal lash either, very clumpy and dry I thought! My sister uses lancome's hypose mascara and it is REALLY good, can't quite justify £20 on a mascara though because I only wear it like once a week haha.

Ahh I loved this post! I personally like long posts with lots of pictures :D. I'm so tempted by Coralista but the price has been putting me off. Oh but it's so pretty looking! I really like the colours you used on your eyes. Shame about your new palette not being as good as you'd hoped, but you made it look fab :). Oh an congrats on reaching over 500, that's brilliant! xo

This was a great post! As a freelance makeup artist I'm always interested to hear other people's reviews on makeup, I I pretty much agree with everything you said here. It also reminded me to grab some more primer when I'm in Mac on the weekend.

I know what you mean about mascaras, it's so hard to find a good one. I have tried both Clinique and Bad girl and didn't really get on with them. I only ever use Covergirl mascara now, which is awkward I know seeing as I can only get it when I'm in Canada/America but it's so good. (For me anyway)

    I read all that!

I don't really use primer, but after reading your review on Mac's Prep and Prime, I am considering it.

Like you, I have yet to find "The One" of mascaras. My lashes are so wimpy and straight that most mascaras are about the same on me. BOO! Asian eyes! Your eye makeup looks perfect, by the way.

Did you see MAC's Stylishly Yours collection? It was so colorful. My boyfriend and I actually looked and Cham Pale and went, "Boring!" They were ALL neutral pieces.

Estee Lauder is LOVE. I use the regular Double Wear and it is the best foundation I've yet to use. Have you tried other products from EL? Really high quality.

This comment is long enough 😛

I think the length of your posts are fine. If you really feel they are too long, maybe read back and edit? You do a nice amount interspersing with pictures, though.

My blushers never seen to make it past lunchtime, maybe I should try a Mac blush, I don't know why I haven't before. I used to love bad gal mascara, until it dried up so quickly, esp for how much they cost!

Great detailed post! I know what you mean about someone else buying you makeup – for my birthday, a friend bought me a Mac mineralize eyeshadow duo but I never wear eyeshadow and the colours aren't something I'd immediately go for but I'm open to trying it out. It is Mac, after all!
The thing about Benefit is so true! I've only ever received it or bought it as a gift. Very tempted to get a primer now.
As for mascara, I know everyone is different but I love Lancome Virtuose – it really makes a difference in the curl and length and I have the shortest, straightest eyelashes out there! You should ask for any mascara samples when you next buy makeup and build up a little collection of mini mascaras 😉
Haha I find it funny that you still do your brows under your fringe! When I used to have a side fringe, I'd skip putting any makeup on my forehead!
All your followers are completely deserved so well done or congratulations – I'm never really sure what's right to say! 🙂
This may be one of the longest comments I've ever left; you're rubbing off on me! x

Wow, I thought I had a lot of makeup, but your collection is amazing! I very rarely even go into MAC stores, not because I don't like the makeup but because I'm scared I'll blow all my money in there – I'm bad enough when it comes to cheap brands in Superdrug!

I worry that my posts are too long sometimes too and sometimes I'll go back and edit really big chunks out of what I've written, but then other times I'll be like, "meh, if people really want to read it, they will. If they don't, oh well!" I love reading what you've got to say and clearly a lot of other people do too! To be honest, I much prefer blogs with lots of text rather than the ones that are just photos – those ones are boring! x

I love benefit as my extra indulgence make-up- I'm a Bare Minerals whore for everything else! Tip for the blusher- try a small amount of highlighter underneath or a smudge of primer just before you apply it. I agree the staying power isn't wonderful, but I love the shade of my dandelion too much to find a replacement!

Mascara- well I mentioned I'm a mineral whore and they're mascara is brilliant. I struggled for AGES to find a mascara that worked for me. I defo need the eyelash curlers before hand but other than that purrrrrfect.

i swear by dermalogica stuff. i buy cheapie cleansers & moisturisers in boots when they're on offer but i always end up going back to dermalogica active moist, even if it does cost a bomb. one bottle normally lasts me a year though! i've been looking for a good primer too, you've tempted me to try out that gal.

and don't worry about doing long posts, i really enjoyed this one. its more interesting to read than just loads of pictures and a couple of lines of text 🙂 x

I tend to like getting the mini versions of things incase I don't like it. I really want to get some more Mac stuff this year, so expensive though 🙁 xxxx

I use mascara made by Mally. I'm not sure if you can get it anywhere else besides QVC.com. It's the BEST! I have it on autodelivery and they send me a new tube every 3 months. It definitely isn't a mascara for people who rush with their makeup. You have to take your time with it and make sure it dries!!! But it makes my lashes SO thick, long and full, and BLACK! I love it! People always ask if I'm wearing falsies and I've never worn them in my life! This mascara is amazing, period. Get some if you can!

I do think if I could have invented (well founded) any make-up brand it would have been Benefit, I LOVE there quirky ways, naming products in a way no one else in the market does.
And Bad Gal will always be one of my faves xx

What nice make up you have! I love your Benefit make up gift. I've only ever gotten only one ting from that brand and that's the concealer (I forgot the name) and it didn't turn out very good :/ but I've seen youtube videos saying how nice the Coralista blush is!

I had had the same problem with mascara too! I tried using different brands and I have to say that by far the CoverGirl's Lash Blash Lenght has work pretty well for me! The big plus about it is that it doesn't flake because I tend to rub my eye unintentionally, and it really does work. The Lash Blast mascara one is really good too 🙂

I really want to like benefit stuff I really do…and I guess it's not that I don't like it, more so that I've not been blown away by it. It's not a brand I particularly care for. I feel like I go for the same make up routine (I do miss primer…) – feel maybe I need to branch out more. I've found brands that I really like (elizabeth arden, clinique,mac,smashbox..) but I'm always open to try something new. I really need to get some decent skin care stuff. I use vitimain e at the moment (glory of being a student) but feel I need to really invest in a total bad ass cleanser and moisturiser. Any suggestions are welcome xox
