This quote on the wall of the Bare Minerals Boutique in Glasgow is like nothing I have ever seen before in a cosmetics counter. They are a brand that I have always been rather intrigued by, especially with close friends like Chloe singing their praises. So when they invited me in for a make under I jumped at the chance. Much like my fashion habits mentioned in the last post, I feel like I can get somewhat stuck in a familiar rut when it comes to my makeup routine. I have never verged away from a liquid foundation, and I have always been convinced that any sort of mineral based loose makeup would just cling to my skin in all the wrong places (apart from powder, I always have the need to ‘set’ my foundation with powder) I knew I had set up a challenge in my own head for the girls at Bare Minerals to convince me otherwise – and I was pleasantly surprised.
A slightly different look from what I would normally go for (see, lady of habit here with mega blusher and cat flick eyes!) but I was really pleased with the end result. As you can imagine, the Bare Minerals products felt a lot ‘lighter’ on my skin (think gradual build up rather than slapping it all on) but still managed to provide me with a medium coverage which I would normally go for. My artist Sarah was so helpful and very knowledgeable about the ins and outs of each product, what they actually contain and why they work the way they do. I explained to her my concerns, of how I was convinced that a loose powder foundation was just a massive no go for my skin. If I had to sum up Bare Minerals in one word it would be ‘natural’ – but not the kind of natural that you are thinking. You can still achieve a medium to heavy coverage, and a night time glam look with their products, but with ingredients so pure and skin friendly that you could actually sleep with it on without feeling guilty! Quite often the case when I stumble in drunk at 4am and forget to reach for the face wipes.
I think after my birthday I will be looking to buy one of their get started kits. It provides all the things I need to achieve my ‘perfect’ base. They also have a skincare range than Sarah tried out on me, I especially liked the moisturiser but I’m currently using my Neals Yard one from last months Glossybox. So I’ll see how I feel when I finish that one 🙂 Bare Minerals have also released a range of ready to go products, if you find doing your eyemakeup or blusher with loose powders a bit fiddly (especially in situations like on the train, I’m sure we’ve all been there!) Then their pressed versions are available, with the same skin friendly dynamics in a compact form.
I had never ever considered makeup as skincare (or just as important as) before my visit to their boutique. Have always viewed these as two totally separate things but now I think I will question more the ingredients of my makeup – because they could be the things doing the damage to my skin (whilst I moan that my box of skincare goodies below don’t bloody work)

I am just so envious of your Dexter. He looks like the best friend a girl could ever have. Sounds like I've mixed up your boyfriend and your cats names but really I'm just a cat lady.
I love those photos of you daring to bare. You don't look different, your face doesn't change it's just more 'polished' with makeup. I've been trying to get my skin into a decent state so I can dare to bare (love that expression) and I hadn't considered my makeup as being something that would hinder that ! So this has opened my eyes to something that seems so obvious now !!!
Sorry about the essay ! Molly xo

Awwww Dexter is actually the CUTEST THING EVER (hope my kittens/cats didn't hear that!). I totally know what you mean about daring to bare, I always make sure my Sundays are makeup-free days, no matter what I'm doing. And Snog, Marry, Avoid is such an awesome program for the same reason you mentioned – people are always beautiful without makeup, but so many people wear like 10" of it to give them confidence.. confidence comes from within though!! Great post 🙂 xxxx

awww what a great post ayden 🙂 made me smile on this miserable day!
i LOVE the makeup look of your bareminerals makeover! it looks bold but in quite a natural way. the quote thing is really interesting too, gives you something to think about and it's pretty spot on. never given bareminerals a second look before, but id quite like to try the more natural look too. and get out of my own makeup rut too!
also, really impressed with the "dare to bare" idea. massive respect to you for doing it! it takes a lot of guts to post pics without makeup, i dont even like leaving the house without it…let alone posting a pic on the internet! as molly^ said, you still look gorgeous without makeup, you have a lovely even skin tone (very jealous, i still have teenage skin at the age of 24!). luckily, i enjoy wearing makeup and try to use it to enhance rather than mask my features. so maybe i have a little bit of that bareminerals confidence in me too… but definitely not the confidence to "dare to bare"!
i completely adore dexter btw. you should end EVERY post with dexter updates and pictures! or he could have his own blog? 😛

Beautiful! I love love the natural look! I always feel a lot prettier when I just throw on a little blush and mascara– even though I LOVE some funky colors on my eyes when dressing up and I've been totally crushing on bright red lips lately too..
BUT I love your make-down, you look gorgeous (before, after and in-between)! I've always wanted to check out BM, but i've been a poot starving artist.. so the makeup sales at target will have to do for now. 🙂
I hope more ladies "dare to go bare" its such a pretty look, and *everyone* is so naturally gorgeous– we all deserve to believe in that.. ya know what I mean?
ALSO.. what a sweet kitty you have! I have 3 really sweet kitties that are great buddies, when they were young they were naughty-inquisitive little things, but they quickly became dream pets. 🙂
Have a great weekend lady! 😉

I've heard a lot of positive things about Bare Minerals but like you before this have never tried them out, I always think of them as a little pricey for my student pockets but I think one day I'll have to go and have a venture over to their stand and ask what all the fuss is about! It certainly looks amazing on you! It's really true how we all become dependent upon makeup in our everyday lives so it's nice to see those pictures of you daring to bare! (:
And Dexter is so cute and I'm not even a cat person so that's a compliment! xx

What a great post Ayden, I have tried Bare Minerals before and although they felt good on my skin, I can't wear them without concealer. I get a lot of breakouts and the powder just can't cover them. i do like this as a foundation though. I've always wanted to try their eyeshadows as they are such lush colours. You look gorgeous without make up, not sure I would be brave enough to bare my face without! Dexter is a bit of a cutie isn't he? My parent's dog is called Dexter too 🙂 xx

Brill post… and man, you're one gorgeous gal with or without make-up! I started using bare minerals last summer, mainly to cover up left-over rosacea marks, and boy does it hide them so well.
@fashion bandit… I found if I used the small sample brush they give you with the freebie that it was better for covering up specific areas than any of the normal size brushes!
p.s. Dexter is super cute!!

Dexter is so cute!
June 8, 2012 at 6:42 pmI love the Bare Minerals philosophy, you look stunning after your "Make Under". I had one last year and even though it was a very different look from my usual make-up I really liked how light the products felt on my skin.
Girls Who Dare To Bare was such a good idea, I took part in it and it was great how many bloggers got involved. x

The Bare Minerals products looks great and you look lovely how your make up is after the make under 🙂 I like the sound of their starter kits!

Dexter is the cutest wee guy, I cannot wait to meet the wee guy.
I'm still stuck on liquid as it's pretty quick for me. Did flirt with the most amaze stilla powder a while bake but think it's discontinued.

I think it's easier to go without make-up when you don't have any blemishes. I try not to put any make-up on when my skin is clear, because I'm lazy and I want to give my skin a break from the layers I slap on sometimes. It's refreshing 🙂
I quite fancy a make-under from Bare Minerals now 🙂 I think I tried a dupe once and it just stuck to all the wrong places. Maybe that's because it wasn't the real deal! x

I think that if I didn't have such acne-ridden skin, I would go bare faced less. I try not to wear too much when the weather is nice as I like my skin to breathe, but my skin has gotten so bad lately I feel like I can't go out without foundation. I have an anti-blemish foundation though as I don't want to make my skin even worse. I love summer days because I always feel more confident when I've caught a bit of the sun on my face!
How adorable is Dexter! We really want a pet, a dog ideally but we have been considering cats as we're out all day.

Oooh you look gorgeous!! Do BM now do eyeshadow palettes? Very intriguing!!
Cute kitty, I hope he's named after Dexter the serial killer. 😉

The make under looks great! I'm desperate for a complete shake up of my make-up and skin care routine so I might just have to pay them a visit…
June 10, 2012 at 9:28 pmAnd Dexter is still insanely beautiful 🙂

You look so beautiful without makeup, Ayden! I wish I was as blessed as you – without makeup I look rather like a zombie, not good. I've never though to try bare minerals either, despite all of the wonderful things I've heard about it, but I think you've convinced to give them a try with this post! 🙂
I hope you're having a great day 🙂 xxx

You look great without makeup!
June 11, 2012 at 5:09 pmBare Minerals still isn't very "natural". You should try what I buy! I buy mineral foundations from theallnaturalface.com
It's so much cheaper than BM, and it's handmade and natural.

That second to last picture of you is so gorgeous! You look amazing in all the photos to be fair =)
June 12, 2012 at 3:54 pmI would not go for mineral foundation either but it appears to work for you!

You have no idea how jealous I am that you have a whole dedicated boutique for BM in your neck of the woods! I'm glad you enjoyed it, and I think the starter kits are good value to start off with, but I've also recently discovered so bits and pieces that I mix and match with my BM which are a bit more purse friendly- hit me with a message if you decided to purchase/re purchase and I'll fill you in.
I've never tried the BM skincare either, but I've heard reasonable things. I'm actually using No 7 Beautiful Skin at the moment- they have ranges for basically every skin type, but the normal/oily range is completely oil free, and love the the moisturisers have SPF and 5* UVA protection in them. Pl;us, even without the Boots £5 off No7 vouchers, they're good value for money.
